On the Road to Golgotha, 2022

A vision witnessed by an unknown Judean on the road to Golgotha as they traveled to witness the crucifixion of two thieves and a rebel of Roman rule.

In On the Road to Golgotha, the biblical journey becomes a meditation on the burden of humanity itself. Rather than depicting Christ literally carrying the cross, the figure is composed of stone, flesh, roots, and a multitude of human faces—an accumulation of suffering, weakness, wisdom, cruelty, and longing. The towering form becomes both man and landscape, a living monument to the human condition. As with much of my work, the image emerged through the discovery of forms rather than from a predetermined narrative, allowing one figure to transform into another. Golgotha becomes not simply a destination, but a psychological and mythic landscape: the burden we carry, and the humanity we carry with us.
