A strange procession of five grotesque figures makes its way through a desolate landscape beneath a brooding sky. Neither entirely human nor wholly monstrous, these curious beings resemble ancient woodland spirits, their twisted bodies woven from roots, bark, and decaying vegetation. With arms raised in apparent supplication or ecstasy, they seem engaged in some forgotten ritual, responding to an unseen power or the mysterious spectral presence unfolding above them. Their expressions range from terror to bewilderment, suggesting that each experiences this encounter in a different way.
Cortege of the Underlings draws upon the spirit of medieval folklore and the grotesque imagination of Hieronymus Bosch, inhabiting that uncertain territory between the sacred and the absurd. There is something simultaneously unsettling and comical about these creatures, whose solemn procession might be an act of worship, a celebration, or a lamentation. Like so many figures from the realm of myth, their true purpose remains elusive, inviting the viewer to contemplate the mysteries of a world that exists just beyond the boundaries of reason.
