The ocean depths have long served as a metaphor for the unconscious, the unknown, and the primordial origins of life. The Deep Deep Dark imagines one of its impossible inhabitants: a transparent sphere enclosing an entire ecosystem of uncanny beings, suspended together like a forgotten world. Neither entirely natural nor wholly fantastical, the image suggests that the deepest places are not merely empty, but inhabited by mysteries that exist beyond ordinary understanding. What lies hidden in darkness is not always monstrous. Sometimes it is simply too strange to belong to the daylight.

Originally painted in 2021, this work remained untitled for five years because it seemed to be waiting for the world it belonged to. The central image had arrived, but its context had not. Returning to the painting in 2026, I placed the sphere in the darkness of the ocean floor, where the composition finally felt complete. What had once appeared as an isolated biological curiosity became something older and more mysterious—an impossible object resting in the silent depths, as though it had always been there, waiting to be found. The experience was a reminder that paintings sometimes possess their own sense of time, revealing their meaning only when they are ready.
